Abstract

Alumina threads are formed by the deflocculation of Al(OH)3 gel with an aqs. soln. of an organic polymer such as polyacrylamide (Mol. wt. 50,000-200,000). A continuous thread of the hydroxide can be drawn from the polymer solution and later dried at 100-200 C and fired at 1300 degrees C to form an Al2O3 fibre useful for high temp. insulation, filters, metal reinforcement. The preferred raw material is boehmite dispersed in an acid medium (pH 2-6 pref. 3.5-4.5).
