Abstract

High temperature polycrystalline fibres are manufactured by concentrating an aqueous solution of a water-soluble inorganic metal salt selected from the sulphates, chlorides, oxychlorides, phosphates, acetates and nitrates of aluminium, beryllium, chromium, magnesium, thorium, uranium and zirconium and mixtures thereof, to a viscosity in the range of 1-1000 poises, the solids concentration thereby being equivalent to less than 50% by weight of the metal oxide, fiberizing the solution whilst at the said viscosity, drying the fibres so formed, and heating the dried fibres at a temperature in the range of 800-2500 DEG F. until the solvent is eliminated, the salt residue is decomposed to a crystalline metal oxide and the density of the calcined fibres is increased. As stabilizing agents for the fibres there may be used calcium and magnesium oxides and hydroxides, silica, uranium hydroxide and alkaline compounds.
