Abstract
Bodies containing a major amount of calcium hydroxide are prepared by slaking calcium oxide with water at a temperature below 200 DEG C., cooling and purifying the resultant calcium hydroxide, adding a 250% by weight excess of water to form a paste, shaping the paste into rods or small tubes and drying the formed paste to a water content of less than 5% by weight. The drying is preferably performed at a temperature ranging from 700 DEG to 900 DEG C. and the paste may be dried to a residual water content of 2% by weight. Up to 10% by weight of kaolin may be added to the paste after the addition of the excess water but prior to forming. The paste may be extruded on to a conveyer belt which travels through a drying oven, when after drying the rods or tubes are broken up into discrete tubes or bodies.
