Abstract

beta-Al2O3 bodies are produced from particles 1-5 u in length by forming the desired shape having in the unsintered state a density of at least 40% w.r.t. the theoretical density and sintering by passing the body at a controlled speed of 1.3-10.0 cm/min. through a zone heated to 1650-1825 degrees C in an oxygen-containing atmos. to produce a dense body. The body is pref. shaped by preparing a suspension of beta-Al2O3 particles in an organic liquid having a dielectric constant of 12-24 at 25 degrees C and electrophoretically depositing the particles on a positive electrode in a dielectric field of 100-10000 V/cm. The beta-Al2O3 bodies are used as a solid electrolyte in sources of electric energy, such as high-energy batteries contg. a Na anode and S cathode washing at temps. above m.pts. of Na and S. The prodn. of beta-Al2O3 bodies described above is simpler than the known methods, and the reproducibility is good. Bodies having smooth uniform surface are obtained.
