Abstract
In an electrolytic cell for high temp. steam built up in layers and having >=2 metallic elements isolated from each other supplying power to the anode and cathode, the cathode consists of a substrate of a porous cerment onto which a thin layer of a solid electrolyte is applied. The electrolyte is a mixt. of refractory oxides in soln. soln., and is enclosed by a porous overlayer forming the anode. Current is carried between the metallic conductors and the electrodes by layers of a conductive sponge on either side of the electrolyte. Used for prodn. of H on large scale for organic chemical synthesis, metal ore reduction etc. High efficiency and mechanical stability are achieved with lower capital costs than in previous cells.
