Abstract

Pure calcined beryllia powder is cold-compacted, and then heated to a temperature not higher than 1400 DEG C. and for such a period that substantially all the particles are welded together, after which the compact is heated to at least 1500 DEG C. The first heating step is preferably carried out at a temperature in the region of, but not less than, the temperature at which the beryllia was originally calcined. For example, if the calcination were at about 1250 DEG C., the first heating should be from 1250 DEG C. to 1400 DEG C. In another case, a beryllia powder calcined at 900 DEG C. was cold compacted, and heated for at least 40 hours between 1100 DEG C. and 1400 DEG C. The heating to a sintering temperature of at least 1500 DEG C. may be carried out continuously or in stages. The calcined beryllia powder may be produced by treating suitable beryllium compounds, for example the hydroxide, carbonate, or oxalate to 500 DEG C.-1400 DEG C.
