Abstract
Sintered pellets of actinide oxides, or mixtures thereof, having an oxygen: actinide ratio of 2 are formed from a powder of actinide oxides, or mixtures thereof, having an oxygen: actinide ratio of 2 or more, and with a specific surface area below 4 m.2/g. and particle size less than 40 Á by pressing into pellets and sintering the pellets in a non-oxidizing atmosphere free from hydrocarbons at a temperature between 1150 and 1600 C. for between 1 and 8 hours, the temperature rise being not more than 600 C./hour. The sintering atmosphere may be hydrogen, nitrogen, argon, a mixture of these, or a vacuum. The actinide may be U or Th (see also Division G6).
