Abstract

1376626 Sintered Cu-CdO materials SQUARE D CO 25 Oct 1972 [27 Oct 1971] 49876/71 Headings C7A and C7D Electrical contact materials are produced by mixing irregular copper powder having a particle size not greater than 350 mesh (B.S.) and cadmium oxide powder having a particle size not greater than 1 micron to provide a mixture in which cadmium oxide is present in an amount of 2À5 to 20 wt. per cent of the copper; compacting the mixture to a desired shape; and sintering the compacted shape. Preferably the mixing is effected by dry tumble milling; the compacting is effected at 30 to 40 tons per square inch; sintering is carried out in dry argon at 700‹C or below; and the sintered compacts are coined or stamped at 45 tons per square inch. The sintered products in which the cadmium oxide is present as a fine uniform dispersion in the copper matrix, are stated to be novel electrical contact materials.
