[Also in Divisions C1 and H1] A powder 1, e.g. a ceramic compound, to be isostatically compressed and sintered in the presence of heat and vacuum is placed in an enclosure 2 surrounded by a pressure transmitting agent 5 within a deformable envelope 6 located in a pressure chamber comprised by ends 7, 8 and ring 9. Such assembly, including the ends of rams 12, 13 is enclosed within a vacuum chamber 14 incorporating a high frequency heating winding 17. The agent 5 may be alumina or a metal which melts below the sintering temperature.
