Abstract

A refractory composition containing at least 50% by weight of free lime such as pure lime, dead burned dolomite and mixtures of lime and dolomite with dead burned magnesia, is flash fired by raising its temperature to at least 1000 DEG F. in a time not exceeding five minutes. The refractory powders are vacuum extruded, calcined at 2800 DEG F. to 3000 DEG F., crushed to size and then moulded to shape using paraffin wax, oil or tar as a binder. The shaped refractories are finally fired at 2500 DEG F. to 3000 DEG F., the time taken to 1000 DEG F. not exceeding five minutes and the time to 1500 DEG F. preferably not exceeding fifteen minutes. U.S.A. Specifications 2,678,887 and 2,876,122 are referred to.ALSO:A refractory containing at least 50% by weight of free lime is flash fired by raising its temperature to at least 1000 DEG F. in a period not exceeding fine minutes. The refractories which are so treated are:- pure lime, dead burned dolomite, and mixtures of lime and dolomite with dead burned magnesia. The refractory powders are vacuum extruded, calcined at 2800 DEG F. to 3000 DEG F., crushed to size and then moulded to shape using paraffin wax, oil or tar as a binder.
