Abstract

Magnesium of at least 99.7 per cent purity is obtained from magnesia-containing material by degassing said material by heating in an oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature between 650 DEG and 1000 DEG C. and then charging said material with ferro-silicon into an externally heated retort maintained at a temperature of 1,150 DEG -1,200 DEG C. maintaining the charge under vacuum until the metal has been distilled and condensed in coherent ductile form within a portion of the retort, and thereafter withdrawing the condensed metal directly from the hot retort in the presence of air. Air and gases are rapidly evacuated from the retort to provide a pressure of less than 0.5 mm. of mercury in the charge during the initial stage of the heating, before any substantial evolution of magnesium vapour, the pressure then being maintained substantially constant while the magnesium is distilled.
