Abstract

An alloy of one or more of the reactive metals Np, Ce and Am with Al or Be is produced by heating a mixture of a halide of the reactive metal(s) and Al or Be at 700 DEG -1200 DEG C. in vacuum. The Al or Be halide formed during the reaction is simultaneously distilled off and may be condensed to recover the Al or Be therein. The Al or Be may be removed from the alloy by distillation to produce the reactive metal(s). Specific examples of the production of the alloys 75 per cent Np, 25 per cent Al and 67 per cent Np, 33 per cent Be are described, the heating being performed in a beryllium oxide crucible in each case.
