Abstract

A refractory metal is produced by reducing its halide under an inert atmosphere by a reducing metal at an elevated temperature, drawing off the resultant reducing metal halide, distilling off the impurities and condensing them in a second reaction vessel containing a new charge of reducing metal to reduce more refractory metal halide, the purified refractory metal being withdrawn from the first vessel. The reaction mass in the second vessel is now treated as the initial mass, the impurities condensing in the first vessel so that the process is cyclical. The refractory metals are:-Be, Nb, Cr, Hf, Mo, W, Ti, U, V, and Zr. The reduction is preferably effected at 750-1100 DEG C. and the distillation at 1000 DEG C.
