Abstract
Titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium or tantalum is produced by injecting a liquid halide thereof into a molten alkali metal at a velocity between 10 and 200 feet per second, in an inert atmosphere. The outside surface of the reaction vessel is preferably maintained at a temperature between 800 and 1000 DEG C. When the reaction is completed additional amounts of alkali metal and halide may be added before the refractory metal is recovered from the reaction mass.
