Abstract

Boron and zinc chloride, bromide, or iodide, are produced by the interaction of zinc and the appropriate boron halide. The boron halide is injected into the reaction chamber in vapour form while the zinc is injected in vapour form or in finely divided liquid or solid form. Finely divided solid zinc may be injected as a suspension in an inert gas. The vaporous boron halide is injected first so as to remove air. The reaction chamber, which may be of quartz, is preferably heated above 907 DEG C., e.g. at 950 DEG C. The reaction pressure may be at, above, or below atmospheric pressure. Solid boron, which deposits during the reaction on the walls of the chamber and a baffle located at the exit thereof, is removed after the chamber has been allowed to cool. Vaporous zinc chloride and unreacted zinc and boron halide may be separately condensed, or only the zinc chloride condensed. In either case, the unreacted zinc and boron halide may be returned to the process. The zinc halide may be used in the production of further zinc and boron halide.
