Abstract
Silane results from the reaction of a solution silicon tetrachloride added to a liquid suspension of lithium aluminium hydride which is maintained in excess, over that required for complete chemical reaction, with silicon tetrachloride. The silane is further purified by subsequently passing the gas, through a suspension of the hydride. Tetrahydrofuran is preferred as the liquid medium. Further purification of silane may be effected by heating the gas to a temperature lower than the decomposition temperature of the silane but high enough to decompose other hydrides which may be present. Silicon is produced by thermal decomposition of the silane, preferably according to the method of Specification 745,698.
