Abstract
Molten silicon is purified by treatment with a gas mixture comprising one or more of chlorine, hydrogen chloride, trichlorosilane, and silicon tetrachloride together with oxygen and/or steam. The gas mixture may also contain argon. Treatment may be under super- or sub-atmospheric pressure, e.g. 100 mm. of mercury. The gas mixture may be passed over molten silicon in the form of a hanging drop or molten zone, or may be bubbled through molten silicon contained in a crucible of silicon carbide, quartz, or carbon. An absorbent surface, e.g. of quartz wool which has been heated to 600 DEG -700 DEG C. or hydrated silica, may be provided in a cool part of the purifying apparatus. The whole purifying apparatus may be enclosed in a water jacket.
