Abstract
Boron nitride is produced by passing chlorine gas through boron carbide heated to above 300 DEG C out of contact with air or oxygen, immediately mixing the boron trichloride produced with ammonia and immediately heating the mixture to 500 DEG C and ultimately raising the temperature of the mixture to at least 1600 DEG C out of contact with air or oxygen, and filtering the reaction product to remove boron nitride. Dry chlorine is fed at 12 into graphite tube 15 surrounded by casing 15a containing heat-insulating material. Tube 15 is packed with lumps or grains of boron carbide and heated by a resistance heater to about 400 DEG C. The boron trichloride formed is passed directly to 20 and passes through tube 21 into graphite tube 23, which is heated by current supplied through water cooled electrode clamps <PICT:0711254/III/1> and bus bars 24, 25, and is surrounded by casings 23a, 23b containing heat-insulating material. The tube 21 ends at a point where the temperature in tube 23 is at least 500 DEG C. Excess ammonia enters at 26 and after mixing with the boron trichloride passes through graphite baffles 30, which create turbulence where the temperature is at least 1800 DEG C. Graphite tube 27 is provided for measuring the temperature by optical pyrometer. The reaction products pass out through air or water cooled pipe 32 to woven glass fabric filter 41 for removal of boron nitride. Hydrogen chloride may be recovered from the waste gases, mainly nitrogen and hydrogen, by scrubbing. The filter may be at 335 DEG C. or above, e.g. above 500 DEG C., but is preferably kept at below 100 DEG C.
