Abstract
Flat glass which has been manufactured in ribbon form on a bath of molten tin is treated by contacting the glass surface which has been in contact with the molten tin with a gaseous halogen reagent for a sufficient time and at a sufficient temperature to render harmless those harmful impurities which have entered the glass surface as a result of its contact with the molten tin. The glass ribbon is preferably passed through a zone containing the gaseous halogen, e.g. chlorine or hydrogen chloride gas, at the beginning of the annealing lehr. Alternatively the zone may comprise a melt of a metal halide e.g. zinc chloride having a vapour pressure of 1 mm., an atmosphere of nitrogen being maintained above the melt. The glass surface is presented to the gaseous halogen for a time of from one to five minutes at temperatures of from 400 DEG to 600 DEG C. The film of zinc chloride found on the glass is washed off with hot water.
