Abstract

In a method of manufacturing flat glass during which the glass in ribbon form is supported on a bath of molten metal over which a plenum of protective atmosphere is maintained, that part of the molten metal which is exposed, particularly at the outlet end of the bath, is additionally protected against contamination by a covering of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, or an equimolecular eutectic mixture of the two. The mixture may be either molten or in solid form, and must be solid at the outlet and where the temperature is about 600 DEG C. The coating of material is preferably about 4 mm. thick.
