Abstract

A silicon enriched diffusion zone is formed on the surface of steel, alloy steel or a chromenickel alloy by heating to 900 DEG -1200 DEG C in a powder mixture comprising 0.3 to 3% by weight of free silicon or sufficient of a silicon based alloy such as ferro silicon (80% Si) to produce 0.3 to 3% silicon, up to 0.5% of a halide such as NH4Cl and a neutral filler such as Al2O3. The silicon or silicon based alloy powder has a grain size under 5 microns. Chromium or aluminium may also be diffused into the alloy at the same time as the silicon.
