Abstract

An iron-chromium alloy is produced by subjecting a sheet of mild steel or wrought iron to chromium diffusion in the presence of nitrous oxide under conditions such that not less than 20% by weight of the iron is replaced by chromium. The sheet is preferably not more than 0.008 inch thick and should not contain more than 0.05%P, 0.05%S, 0.5%Mn, 0.15%Si and 0.12%C. The diffusion is effected in a box, sealed as described in Specification 939,801 and filled with a mixture of sand, chromium powder and ammonium nitrate (to generate the nitrous oxide). The mixture may also contain ammonium chloride and ammonium fluoride. After heating to 1050-1400 DEG C. the box may be cooled under the canopy described in Specification 909,137.
