Abstract
In making medals, coins &c. involving die stamping, flat mild steel blanks are provided by a halide diffusion process with a ductile iron-chromium alloy layer having a chromium content of 25-30%. Blanks the size and thickness of shillings are packed in a mixture of 65% by weight chromium powder and 35% by weight kaolin in a steel box, a little ammonium iodide is added and the box is sealed. The box is heated for six hours at 1020 DEG C. to coat the blanks with an iron-chromium alloy containing 25% chromium, 0.002 inches thick, or for twelve hours at 1070 DEG C. to produce the alloy layer 0.005 inches thick. Ferrochrome powder may be used instead of chromium powder. Specifications 572,703, 574,737, 575,676, 577,504, 586,241, 586,376 and 646,637 are referred to.
