Abstract
Boron trichloride is produced by heating a boron containing ore having a melting-point above 700 DEG C., with carbon, to above 500 DEG C. but below the melting point of the ore, and passing chlorine gas through the bed of heated mixture and recovering the volatile boron trichloride. The mixture is heated preferably to above 700 DEG C. Boron containing ores are alkaline earth or alkali metal borates, e.g. calcium borate (Colmanite or Ulexite) and are mixed with carbon in powder form added in excess of the stoichiometric proportions required to combine with all the oxygen in the ore. In order to purify the product the vapour may be either treated with hydrogen and the HCl and CO resulting therefrom removed by distillation or preferably be passed through one or more beds of boron containing ore heated to above 500 DEG C. preferably above 700 DEG C. but below the melting point of the ore.
