Abstract
A mixture of calcium carbide and calcium fluoride is reacted with hydrogen at a temperature of 500 to 1000 DEG C. under a hydrogen pressure of 30 to 60 atmospheres, to produce methane and a solid sintered reaction product consisting of calcium fluoride and calcium hydride which is largely insensitive to moisture. The initial mixture should contain at least 20% and preferably at least 50% of calcium carbide. Reaction accelerating additives for example calcium oxide or chloride may be incorporated and the mixture may be formed into briquettes before reaction.
