Ethylene dichloride is prepared by reacting ethylene with chlorine in the gas phase at an absolute pressure of 300 to 600 mm. Hg. while maintaining the maximum temperature of the reaction zone between 150‹ C. and the boiling- point of ethylene dichloride under the reaction pressure, the ethylene and chlorine being supplied in a molar ratio of 0À9-1À5 ; 1. The resulting ethylene dichloride may be pyrolysed to vinyl chloride in a separate reaction zone at 500-600‹ C. and 300-600 mm. Hg. pressure.
