Abstract

Titanium nitride is produced by heating finely-ground ilmenite or rutile mixed with powdered carbon at a temperature in excess of 1000 DEG C. in an atmosphere of nitrogen. Iron impurities may be partially removed by magnetic means and the remaining iron and other impurities are removed by treatment with dilute acid. Titanium trichloride is produced by passing a mixture of titanium tetrachloride and hydrogen through molten potassium chloride at 850 DEG C., the trichloride remaining in solution in the melt and the hydrogen chloride simultaneously formed passing off.ALSO:To make an anode for use in the production of titanium by fused salt electrolysis, finely milled titanium nitride is compacted at a pressure of 10 tons/sq. in. and is then sintered for two hours at a temperature exceeding 1500 DEG C. in an atmosphere of nitrogen. Finely divided titanium may be added to the nitride as a binding agent. The nitride anode may have an atomic N/Ti ratio not less than 0.9.
