Abstract
In obtaining the metals Ti, Zr, Mg, Al, B, Be, Th, and U by fusion electrolysis of their salts in the presence of alkali metal halides, there is added a compound containing the desired metal halogen, hydrogen, and nitrogen, preferably made by reacting NH3 with the metal halide, e.g. a loose compound of formula (NH3)xTiCl4. Preferably this is heated under reduced pressure in an atmosphere of NH3 at 1000 DEG C., the product being then stable to oxygen and water. Preferably the halogen present is the same as in the fused metal halide being reduced, but a different metal may be used in the added compound to form alloys, e.g. Zr/Ti. The electrodes used may be of the desired metal, carbon, Mn3O4 or chromium oxide. The added compound lowers the fusion point and reduces the formation of "smoke".
