Abstract

A titaniferous ore such as ilmenite or rutile is prepared for treatment with chlorine to produce titanium tetrachloride by mixing the ore with an amount of finely divided solid carbonaceous reducing agent, preferably petroleum coke, in excess of that required to reduce the oxide in the ore to metal whilst oxidizing the carbon of the carbonaceous reducing agent to carbon monoxide, and incorporating in the mixture an aqueous solution containing 1-10 per cent., preferably 3 per cent. based on the combined weight of ore and reducing agent, of an alkali metal carbonate, preferably sodium carbonate, and drying the resulting mixture in a current of heated air having a temperature not in excess of 200 DEG C., and preferably at 150-160 DEG C. If desired the solid ingredients may be mixed dry and then enough water to dissolve the carbonate added to the product which is uniformly mixed. The drying is preferably performed by passing the air over pans in which layers 1/4 -2in. thick are spread out. The porous friable cake thus produced is broken up and charged into a reactor into which chlorine is passed. The residue remaining after this reaction is stated to be pulverulent. Examples of the production of titanium tetrachloride using this procedure are given.
