Abstract

A process for the production of an alkali metal silicate glass with a molar ratio of 1.5 to 4.5 parts SiO2 per part M2O, where M is selected from the group consisting of sodium, potassium, and mixtures of sodium and potassium, and containing from 0.05 to 2% of water and sufficient bubbles to cause fracturing, comprising the operations of: (a) loading raw materials, alkali sources selected from the group consisting of sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, and mixtures of sodium carbonate and potassium carbonate and a source of silica such as sand in an open hearth furnace with a bed area for fusion reactions, equipped with an outlet port and some loading gantries; (b) maintaining the temperature within said furnace above 1093ºC so that a bed of molten silicate glass is formed and that the raw materials that have not reacted float on said bed of molten glass; (c) introducing saturated and dry water vapor under pressure into the molten glass through bubbling elements located in the furnace bed area so that the water vapor bubbles pass from the bottom of said molten glass bed to the upper part, the pressure of said water vapor being regulated so as to produce bubbles of 8 to 18'' (20.3 to 45.7 cm) in diameter that break on the surface of the molten glass at a rate of 5 to 20 bubbles per second; and (d) removing the molten glass from the furnace.
