Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare the titled glass of good quality at a high speed efficiently, by exposing rock crystal powder or SiO2 glass fine particulate powder to a gas for forming doped silica glass, forming an SiO2-dopant solid solution, and making the resultant solid solution into a transparent glass. CONSTITUTION:A rock crystal powder of about 1,000 mesh of fine particulate SiO2 glass powder 52 having a particle size of about 1-10mum is introduced into a rotating vessel 51 and exposed to a gas forming doped silica glass consisting of a gaseous additive, e.g. GeCl4 or POCl3, producing a dopant capable of forming a solid solution with SiO2 on reaction with SiCl4 and water essentially at 500- 1,000 deg.C for about 5min. Thus, the SiO2-dopand solid solution is then formed on the surfaces of the fine particulate SiO2 glass powder 52. The resultant powder 52 is then jetted with a flame 62 from a torch 61 and molten at a temperature of about 1,500-1,700 deg.C to form transparent doped silica glass on a rotating draw down table 64.
