Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare a GeO2-Sb2O3 glass having low transmission loss, in high efficiency, by forming a porous block of GeO2-Sb2O3-SiO2 from a specific glass raw material, reacting the block in an F-containing atmosphere to remove SiO2, and vitrifying the product. CONSTITUTION:A fine powdery mixture of GeO2, Sb2O3 and SiO2 is prepared by the oxidation reaction of a raw material containing Ge, Sb and Si. The mixture is deposited successively to obtain a grown porous block. The block is placed in a reaction vessel 1 and F2 or HF gas is introduced into the vessel through the lower inlet 3 while controlling the temperature in the vessel 1 at about 200 deg.C with the elecrrical furnace 2. SiO2 can be removed from the porous block by this reaction. The temperature in the vessel 1 is raised successively to about 800 deg.C, and the feed gas is changed from F2, etc. to O2 and Cl2 to effect the oxidation and dehydration treatment. Thereafter, the temperature is raised further to convert the porous block to transparent glass. A GeO2-Sb2O3 glass suitable as an optical fiber for transmission of light with long wavelength can be prepared by this method.
