Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture a tansparent glass preform having desired refractive index distribution, by reducing and evaporating a part of dopant added to fine glass particles to be sintered to a transparent glass, thereby controlling the concentration distribution of the dopant. CONSTITUTION:SiCl4, O2 and H2 which are raw materials of glass, and GeCl4 which is a dopant to change the refractive index of the glass, are supplied through the burner 4 placed below the supporting rod 2 suspended in the vessel 1. Fine particles of SiO2 glass are produced by the hydrolytic reaction with an oxyhydrogen flame, and deposited to the supporting rod 2. The depsotion of the particles to the rod is carried out while rotating and vertically oscillating the supporting rod 2, to obtain a glass soot 5 containing GeO2 as a dopant. In the course of pulling up the soot rod and converting to transparent glass by baking with the heater 6, a reducing gas such as CO is introduced into the vessel 1 throgh the gas inlet 7, and a part of the dopant GeO2 is reduced to GeO and evaporated. The concentration of GeO2 is controlled by this procedure, and a transparent glass preform having desired refractive index distribution can be manufactured.
