Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a high purity superior quartz glass pipe by subjecting glass starting material such as SiCl4 to flame hydrolysis and other reaction, depositing the resulting fine glass particles to form a ring-like deposit on a vertically movable and rotatable stage, and heating the ring-like deposit. CONSTITUTION:Glass starting material such as SiCl4, GeCl4 or POCl3, oxygen gas and hydrogen gas from feeder 21 are subjected to flame hydrolysis and oxidation with torch 22, forming SiO2, GeO2 or P2O5 fine glass particles 23 of about 500- 1,000Angstrom particle size. Particles 23 are deposited on stage 25 which has been set at a predetermined position and can be lowered with rotation by device 26, forming porous glass body 24 having central cavity 27. Body 24 is then heated to obtain a superhigh purity quartz glass pipe contg. a reduced amount of transition metals causing optical loss, having a predetermined inside diameter and mirror-like inner and outer surfaces, and suitable for use as a material for a low loss optical fiber.
