Abstract

PURPOSE:To surely form an optical fiber of low loss in a simple process by feeding glass principal starting materials and an aqueous metal salt soln. into a flame and sticking and depositing the resulting glass fine powder on a rodlike substrate. CONSTITUTION:Glass principal starting materials such as SiCl4 and GeCl4 are fed into multi-tubed burner 9 together with various gases such as H2, O2 and He to cause a vapor phase reaction in flame 9'. On the other hand, an aqueous soln. of alkali metal nitrate is introduced into ultrasonic wave generator 8 through duct 7 after purification through introduction pipe 1, ion exchange resin 2-packed column 3, duct 4 and ion exchange resin 5-packed column 6. The soln. is atmiozed with generator 8 and sprayed into flame 9' from nozzle 12. The resulting multicomponent type glass fine powder is stuck and deposited on rodlike substrate 10 to form porous preform 11, which is then converted into transparent glass for an optical fiber by heating.
