Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the hydroxyl group content without reducing the productivity in initiating the oxidation reaction by the vapor phase axial deposition method for preparing a base material for an optical fiber, by adding an inert gas to a combustion flame of carbon monoxide gas and oxygen gas. CONSTITUTION:Fine mixed glass powder of SiO2 with GeO2 and P2O3 are jetted from a core oxyhydrogen burner 11 with argon as a carrier gas, and carbon monoxide gas and oxygen gas are fed thereto. Fine mixed glass powder of SiO2 with P2O3 are then jetted from a cladding oxyhydrogen burner 12 with argon gas, and carbon monoxide gas and oxygen gas are fed thereto. A sintered glass body 13 is thus formed and then deaerated by heating with a heater 14 to give a transparent base material 15 for an optical fiber. The burners 11 and 12 have such a structure as to prevent the deposition of the gaseous glass raw material at the jetting port 21 by enclosing the periphery of the gaseous glass raw material with argon gas jetted from a jetting port 22 on jetting of the gaseous glass raw material from the outlet 21. The deposition efficiency of the raw material is improved by reducing the temperature of the combustion flame by the carbon monoxide gas and the oxygen gas jetted from jetting ports 23 and 24.
