Abstract

PURPOSE:To inexpensively manufacture a high quality transparent optical fiber base material by irradiating glass soot generated by oxidizing glass starting material gases with a high power flux of light when the soot is deposited on a starting member. CONSTITUTION:Glass starting material gases are fed oxyhydrogen burners 1, 2 with oxygen contributing to glass synthesizing reaction as carrier gas to synthesize glass soot in flames 3, 4, and the soot is sprayed on the tip of starting member 5. By irradiating the glass depositing position with high power flux 23 of light such as laser beam, the soot is transparently vitrified at once. Member 5 is pulled up so that transparent glass is always formed at the irradiated position. As a result, transparent optical fiber base material 8 whose central refractive index is higher than the peripheral index is obtd.
