Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce optical fibers causing low loss and having a wide transmission band, by specifying the additive of the core consisting of high purity quartz glass. CONSTITUTION:A glass material gas containing much additive having higher refractive index than SiO2, and a glass material gas containing additive having lower refractive index are respectively discharged from a first burner 3 and a second burner 4, together with the combustion gas for heating, and the glass fine particles are produced by flame hydrolysis of the material gases and deposited on a starting member 5, and glass fine particles 6 are allowed to grow in the axial direction. These fine particles 6 gradually lower a high temperature oven to be sintered and turn to glass, thus becoming the base material for optical fiber. At this time, the content of GeO2 of the core is defined to be less than 15wt%, and the sum of GeO2 and other dopant P2O5 or B2O3 to be more than 15wt%.
