Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce the title material in a high yield by successively adhering a clad layer and a glass forming material to a quartz rod rotatably supported. CONSTITUTION:Flat plate 19 is set at one end part of quartz core rod 18 for a core at a right angle to the axis of rod 18, and rod 18 is raised with rotation. SiCl4 from evaporator 15 is supported on O2 gas, and gas supporting a little refractive index controlling additive is further supported on the O2 gas. This O2 gas is introduced into burner 11 for flame hydrolysis. A burner flame is sprayed upon rod 18 at a right angle to rod 18, and the sprayed material is heat melted with oxyhydrogen burner 20 to form thin clad layer 21. Next burner 11 is inclined upward 24 by angle theta to the axis of rod 18, and SiCl4-supporting O2 gas is fed from evaporator 23 to adhere SiO2 at a right angle to the axis of rod 18 from the lower part of plate 19 in the form of a cylinder with the same diameter as the diameter of plate 19. The SiO2 glass layer is then heated to obtain a base material for glass fiber.
