Abstract

PURPOSE:To economically produce a glass fiber with light transmission loss controlled to a predetermined value by rotating a glass rod consisting of a core and a clad and melt-laminating glass having a refractive index about equal to or higher than that of the clad on the outside of the rod followed by melt spinning. CONSTITUTION:Glass rod 32 (including dummy rod 31) is rotated consisting of a core and a rod each having a predetermined refractive index distribution in the diametrical direction, and flame burner or plasma flame torch 33 is moved back and forth relatively to rod 32. The rod surface is first exposed to a flame such as an oxyhydrogen flame or a plasma flame, and glass particles having a refractive index equal to or higher than that of the clad are fed into flame or plasma flame 34 from feed opening 35 to laminate molten glass 36 on rod 32, forming jacket layer 37. The resulting preform is melt-spun to produce a glass fiber.
