Abstract

1340849 Optical fibre STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 6 April 1972 15841/72 Heading C1M An optical fibre consisting of a glass core region surrounded by a lower refractive index glass cladding is produced by introducing a powdered core glass or a powdered material precursor of the core glass 23 into a vertically disposed tube 24 of the cladding glass, the powdered material is fused to form molten core glass, and the tube is drawn down to form the fibre 21. The powder is preferably introduced in the form of an aggregate. The powder is fused by being heated at least in part using inductive heating, 25, 26. A plasma heating coil 28 and gas feed 29 may also be provided to give an additional plasma flame. The core may be silica with alkali metal ions and stabilizers and the outside tube of fused silica.
