Abstract
1368093 Silica-based glass POST OFFICE 17 Oct 1972 [9 Aug 1971] 37271/71 Heading C1M A glass for use in a dielectric optical waveguide, and having a refractive index greater than that of vitreous silica, consists essentially of, in weight per cent: SiO2 95-99À7; ZrO and/or Al2O3 0À3-5. The glass may constitute the core glass, the cladding being vitreous silica. The glass may be made by forming a mixture in gaseous form of a silicon compound and a compound of Al and/or Zr, subjecting the gaseous mixture to a radio frequency plasma discharge 11 (e.g. of plasma temperature about 5000‹ K.), and collecting the glass formed on a target 13 (which may rotate, and have a temperature of 1300-1800‹ C.). The silicon compound may be SiCl4, and the metal compound a bromide or chloride. AlCl3 may be prepared by passing chlorine (from 4) over heated aluminium carbide (2). Alternatively chlorine may be passed over heated zirconium. The silicon compound (from 5), Al or Zr compound, and an inert gas (e.g. argon) may be passed through tube 6, which may be heated to at least 200‹ C., to the region surrounded by discharge coil 12. Argon and an argon/oxygen mixture may be supplied through respective concentric pipes 9 and 10. A rod of the glass formed may be enclosed in a silica tube, and assembly drawn down into the optical waveguide, which may have a core diameter of 1-70 Á and an external diameter of 10-100 Á.
