Abstract
PURPOSE:To economically produce a fiber with improved light transmission properties by putting a quartz type glass rod consisting of a core and a clad and having a predetermined refractive index distribution in the diametrical direction into a high silica glass tube whose diameter is slightly larger than the rod diameter followed by melt spinning. CONSTITUTION:Preform 11a consisting of a core and a clad is put into high silica glass tube 12a slightly larger than preform 11a. While evacuating gap 13a with a vacuum pump, a suitable temp. distribution is held with heaters 14a, 14a'. when the softening temp. of tube 12a is lower than that of preform 11a, tube 12a is collapsed along preform 11a. In the contrary case, preform 11a is collapsed along tube 12a. Simultaneously with or independently of the high temp. collapsing, preform 11a and tube 12a are melt-spun to produce fiber 15a.
