Abstract
PURPOSE:To anneal the surface flaws of an optical fiber without causing the change of diameter nor deterioration of the transmission characteristics, and to improve the strength of the optical fiber, by spinning a preform rod cladded with a low-softening point layer, and reheating the spun fiber. CONSTITUTION:A preform rod is manufactured by the vapor-phase deposition of the layer 11 which forms a part of clad and the core part 12 to the inside of the quartz tube 10 used as starting raw material. The outer surface of the quartz tube 10 is clad with the low-softening point layer consisting of quartz glass doped with P2O5 etc. and having lower softening point than the quartz tube 10. Then, the cavity 14 is collapsed and at the same time, the low-softening point layer 13 is vitrified, and the preform rod is molten and drawn to a small diameter fiber. The fiber is reheated at a temperature higher than the softening point of the low-softening point layer 13 to obtain an optical fiber.
