Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the strength of an optical fiber connection part without making it thin by previously forming a thin glass layer, which has a lower softening point than an external glass layer of an optical fiber, around the external glass layer. CONSTITUTION:Optical fibers 1A and 1B are each composed of an axial core glass layer 2, an external glass layer 3 as a cladding layer, a thin glass layer 4 having a lower softening point than the external glass layer 3, and a sheath layer 5 of plastics, etc., successively toward the external circumference. Further, SiO2-P2O5 glass (for thin glass layer 4; decreasing in softening poit according to the content of P2O5) is deposited around the external circumference of the cladding glass layer by an external CVD method. The sheath layer is removed by desired length from the external circumference of an optical fiber end part and after a connection part is formed in a butting process and a heat sealing process, the external circumference of the connection part is heatd above the softening point temperature of the thin glass layer, thus reinforcing the connection part.
