Abstract
PURPOSE:To form an optical fiber bundle having superior transmission characteristics, by using high silicic acid glass having a low softening temperature and excellent workability for the sheath layer of an optical thin rod and a bundling glass pipe in the manufacture of an optical fiber bundle by bundling many optical thin rods in one body. CONSTITUTION:Around an optical fiber consisting of a core 21 and a cladding material 22, a sheath layer 1 of high silicic acid glass (e.g. Vycor glass) having a lower softening point than quartz glass and excellent workability is provided to form an optical thin rod 3. Into a bundling glass pipe 31 made of silicic acid glass of the same material with the said sheath layer 1, optical thin pipes 3 are arrayed and inserted, and then made solid by being heated by a heating means (e.g. oxyhydrogen burner) 32 moving in its lengthwise direction to be made one body, thus obtaining an optical thin rod bundle which does not contain any air bubble.
