Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the tensile strength of a cylindrical base material for an optical fiber and reduce the transmission loss, by depositing fine quartz glass powder on the outer periphery of a molten quartz glass tube to be a jacket part, and depositing a glass raw material and a dopant raw material on the inner periphery of the quartz glass tube. CONSTITUTION:In a cylindrical base material for an optical fiber consising of a cladding part and a jacket part surrounding the cladding part, reinforcing fine quartz glass powder formed by the flame hydrolysis of a quartz glass raw material is deposited on the outer periphery of a molten quartz glass tube to be a jacket. Thus, the tensile strength of the base material is improved. On the other hand, a raw glass material to be a cladding part and a dopant raw material capable of decreasing the refractive index of the glass raw material from the refractive index of the core part are fed into the inside of the molten quartz glass tube, and fine glass powder formed by the flame hydrolysis thereof is then blown on the inner surface of the molten quartz glass tube. Thus, the transmission loss is reduced.
