Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a photo coupling element using optical fibers as waveguides by disposing the optical fibers removed with at least part of clad parts in mutual proximity at a specific distance. CONSTITUTION:A pair of optical fibers each consisting of a core 6 of a high refractive index in the central part and a clad 6 of a low refractive index covering this in cylindrical form are supported in the grooves of glass substrates 4 and the side faces of the clads 6 are polished together with the substrates 4 from above of the substrates 4. Next, as two sheets of the substrates 4 are shifted in the axial direction of the fibers, the coupling length is adjusted. When the substrates 4 are shifted in the direction perpendicular to the axis, the spacing between the cores is adjusted. Adjusting the core 6 in the twisting positions makes possible angled coupling as well. After the adjustment, the optical fibers are bonded and fixed. The cores 6 of such optical fibers are disposed at a distance of less than about their diameter.
