CONSTITUTION:A first core 1 having gradually smaller refractive index from a center of the core toward outside, a core 3 consisting of a second core 2 formed on the outside of the first core 1 and having a refractive index being almost constant in radial direction but being smaller than the refractive index of the first core 1, and a clad 4 formed on the outside of the core 3 and having a smaller refractive index than the core 2, are wholly constituted of doped quartz obtd. by doping pure quartz (SiO2) with germanium or F, etc. By this constitution, the viscosity of the second core 2 at drawing temp. is lowered to almost to the viscosity of the first core 1 or the clad 4 at the drawing temp. thereof. Thus, concentration of stress is eliminated, structural defects are hardly generated, and transmission loss is decreased.
