Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a single polarization mode optical fiber by making a rod of which the core part is extremely asymmetrically off-centered from the clad layer consisting of dielectric such as quartz from a preform through glass lathe, and drawing the same thence applying a metallic coating thereon. CONSTITUTION:In the preform stage of the single polarization mode optical fiber, the diameter of a core 1 is about 0.5-1mm., and the clad part 2 consists of, for example, molten quartz, and the core part of quartz doped with about 10-20mol% GeO2. Then, the specific refractive index difference of the single polarization mode fiber at 1.55mum wavelength is about 2%, and the diameter of the core is about 3.4mum. Next, the preform shown in the figure is set in glass lathe and is cut off of the circumference down to the circular shown by a dotted line. Thereafter, it is drawn and at this same instant, it is coated with metal 3 such as Al; further, a plastic jacket is coated thereon, whereby the single polarization mode optical fiber is completed.
